Chicken Crate

I bought this when I was at the Bouckville Antique Festival in August.

Even though it’s not an antique.

I paid $5 for it.

And no; I don’t plan on raising chickens anytime soon.

(although I can’t tell you how many people asked me where the chickens were as I schlepped this back to the car)

007

I really liked the simple metal latch and corner bands.

008

When I first saw it  I could see it in the office, repurposed into a box for hanging files.

Only when I got it home I discovered it’s about an inch too narrow to hold the folder, and not wide enough to hold 2 rows side by side.

010

Uh-oh, now I have to find another purpose for it.

It’s too small to use as a coffee table.

Maybe as a side table, possibly with a glass top?

002

hmm, maybe…

Or how about as an ottoman?

008

What do you think?

There’s got to be something cool I could use this for.

Or maybe I should just go shopping for those chickens after all.

  1. I love the chicken crate! Maybe just keep it around as a knick-knack? Do you have a porch? You could put mums and pumpkins on it if for a fall decoration. I'm new to your blog, and I'm loving it! I've found some pretty nice stuff along the road too, and I'm always amazed at what people throw away. I really like seeing what you re-purpose things into.

  2. I really like it as an ottoman... it actually goes nice with MY oops I mean your rocker...lol.

I still love that rocker... I have been looking for one since I saw it. Not having any luck though.

Great piece... can't believe it was only $5.00... we would have been fighting over that one...lol.

    Have a great day Rose...

  3. Great price for sure! Honestly, being a city girl, I would have had no idea what it's original purpose was. hahahah

I like it as an ottoman, as well as the side table. I would store my magazines in it.

    love it!

  4. I would put books in it and use it as a little table. I would be afraid it would break as an ottaman.

  5. I think it is awesome....you can decorate it per season and put it out on the porch or keep it in the family room. It is a great find.

  6. While you are thinking about what to do with it permanently you could use it as a "cage" for Halloween. Put some kind of scary animal in it (fake of course) and use it as a decoration.

  7. I'm not sure what I'd have used it for but I'd definitely have bought it. I love things like that and $5 was a steal.

  8. I like it either way. I love the comments you get from people when you buy something weird. This one is up there, but it looks cool, I just hope it still doesn't smell like chickens.....

  11. OMG Rose i have spent the last five hours looking through your blog and i love most of what i see, i have emailed you and i really just love your blog as i am on the same tandem at the moment, repurposing old items found in other peoples junk. I look forward to seeing what you do with this crate, wish they were available in SA, but sadly i have looked in vain.

  12. I like it! I think with a cushion on top it would work great as an ottoman or a small bench.

  13. I see it with a shelf in the middle and hung on the wall as a cabinet. But it works great as an ottoman, too! It's a really cool crate!

  14. I think it would work great as an ottoman! A little rustic and with the slats it doesn't appear as "weighty" since you can see through it. Great find for $5! =)

  15. Hi Rose, I like it as an ottoman too! Just add a cushion and it is ready to use. Great find and an unreal price.

  20. You can purchase a metal frame insert that will hold hanging files(they are free standing, i use them in my old old wooden filing cabinet), that would fit in one side and the other side could a basket or box with office supplies.
