Would you buy this?

012

OK, so you wouldn’t buy it.

How about if you saw it at the curb for free?

Would you stop and pick it up?

Or would you snicker and hit the gas pedal a little harder to get by it faster?

I would most certainly have picked it up, that’s a no brainer.

But I didn’t.

Really!

My sister-in-law did!

I got an excited phone call from her on Sunday.

She was in the car with her husband driving and spotted this.

“Pull over!”  she exclaimed, “Rose would love that!”

Her Hubby, my brother-in-law, instead snickered and sped up.  (sound familiar?  yup, they’re brothers all right)

She got home, called me up and asked if I would want it. (at the time she thought it was a duck or something like that)

Me (dubiously) - “If it’s not plastic, yeah sure, it sounds cool.”

So she corralled her youngest son for help and went back and got it.

So now it’s in my yard, leaning against the fence and awaiting a new role.

016

It is metal, you can see where the paint has worn away in places….

Like the seat…

 010-2

How many children do you think rode on this?

And look at the handle bars, where the paint is completely worn away by countless little hands holding on for dear life.

008

He’s got a bit of a scary smile going on, don’t you think?

007-2

So now that it’s mine, what should I do with it?

And by the way, I know it’s some kind of fish, but what?

Dolphin?  Porpoise?

Do you know?

I’m linking up to a new party I found through visiting Laurel at Chipping with Charm- it’s at  Junker Newbie Stephanie’s place and the party is called “Would you buy it Wednesday

I sure hope she doesn’t  disqualify me for curbshopping it!  I rarely actually buy stuff, but am faced with the same dilemma over whether I should pick something up from the curb or not.

  1. I would have seriously thought about picking it up. It has such character. Where I live no one ever leaves things on the curb, so it isn't something I do or think about. But I think you found a great item.

  2. OMG YES!!! I would so buy it! Or pick it up! Or steal it from your yard if you leave if long enough! I have (on several occasions) trolled thru CL to find one of these type toys... no particular reason other than it's cool as christmas! (BTW.. my ONLY kid is 16.. so this is definitely a 'mommy-only' want).

  8. What a great find! We used to have a few of those (not the dolphin) at our neighborhood park. Kids loved them. Lucky you - not just for the find but for a sister in law that would pick it up for you!

  9. Sure I would stop and nab it.
I remember watching an HGTV show where they repurposed a big plastic horse. They painted it like a Zebra, cut in half then put a half on each side of a tall armoire. It looked like a magic Zebra jumping thru the cabinet. This was for a jungle theme kids room.
The big fishy you have may look cute to decorate a bathroom- LOL

  14. I can't say that I would pick it up but it did remind me of the animals we had in the park when I was a little girl.

Can't wait to see what you do with him!

  15. I would definitely have brought it home for my future grandchildren to enjoy in our backyard. A toy should never be abandoned (Toy Story) lol!

  16. It's a great vintage playground piece!! If I saw it on the curb there would be a little battle going on in my head......the junker in me would be saying "stop and get it" and the realist in me would be saying "but what are you going to do with it". Which one would win.....probably the realist. It's a fabulous piece but I would not have any place to put it.

  17. I love it and would of positioned it in one of my flower gardens with pride while my husband stood there watching me..holding his coffee..with his glasses down on his nose..shaking his head..now..neighbors would come buy and say how cute..where did you get that..how original..hubby would then say it is great and act like he picked out the ideal spot for my new found treasure..LOL..you are a lucky girl..

  19. Although I am certain my husband would kill me, I would SO have picked this little gem up! You just have to love all the worn paint and the scray little grin. :)

  20. Would've been a stop and grab for me!!! That thing would have been in my truck so fast that freaky smile it has would have been gone for sure! I think it is sooo cute! I do believe I'd call it a whale. A friend of mine has it's Pig cousin in her yard for her grands.
My husband has stopped protesting, he just stops where ever and loads the junk. I now have a black lamp post that is going up in my yard soon...he might roll his eyes, but he likes that lamp post too. You gotta start 'em curb shopping young though, so by the time they reach his age they are trained. Your sister in law took real good care of you!

  21. Of course I would buy it....I have his cousin, the DUCK, that I DID buy for $10! LOL!! except mine doesn't have the necessary huge spring needed to make him complete like yours. I think it's a great find, although a little unusual looking for a friendly fish. ;^)

If nothing else, he might bring a fair penny for scrap - JK!

  23. I can't stop laughing! He does have a creepy grin. But I can't say I wouldn't have picked him up. I do love the giant spring. But is he wearing a hat?? LOL!

  24. Would I buy it - YOU BET! Glad it's found a new home ;o)

  29. I think my kids rode on this dolphin, and we had a song for it! Good thing you don't live by me, we would both be diving for the same junk on the side of the road. I should start an addiction group for people who can't help but stop and pull things off the side of the road, that is just one step above garbage. I make my kids drive down the road with me, scanning constantly for "junk". You just never know. Hey, I made a whole table top out of stuff I found on the side of the road! LOVE your blog, now following! Please come back today to link up a "redoux"! Have a great weekend. -K

  31. Sorry, it is not a shark, just check the paint scheme, it is an Orca. Can anyone say Shamu?
