One Year Blogaversary and Fried Bat Wings Giveaway

Edited:The giveaway is now closed.  Thanks to everyone for all the great comments and stories.

It’s been a year today since I started my blog.

One full year!

It went so fast!

*Yet it seems as though I’ve been doing this forever….

Wait, that doesn’t make sense.

But it’s still true.

I have truly enjoyed my foray into this world of blogging.  I feel as though I’ve met and connected with so many wonderful people;  people like you that “get” me and my compulsive curbshopping ways.

You understand how exciting it is to find something totally cool and unexpected just waiting at the curb to be picked up.

You “get” some of the wacky ideas I’ve come up with to repurpose some of this stuff around my house.

And you’ve been so supportive in my quest for finding ways to ‘curb’ my collecting  hoarding tendencies.

Why, I’ve spent more time this past year chatting with you than with my real life friends and family members.

And they thank you too, believe me!

Because of blogging I’m no longer forcing them to listen to tales of my latest curb finds and projects.

I don’t drag my family into the basement to see what I’m working on anymore.

Believe me, they are very happy about me having another outlet for sharing my passion for junk.

So in the spirit of celebration and gratitude, I’m having a giveaway!

And what, you may ask, am I giving away?

Why, Fried Bat Wings, of course!

There may be a few puzzled looks going around right now….

In case you never heard me refer to these before, let me explain.

My husband tells me his Dad had this saying whenever his Mom would buy something just because it was a bargain;

It went something like this;

“Why, you’d buy fried bat wings if they were on sale!“ (I guess the point is that fried batwings would be entirely inedible thus useless no matter how good the price was)

Mike assures me this is some kind of Pennsylvania Dutch saying.

Personally, I think he just made it up to prove a point.

So anyway, in our house whenever I come home all excited about a bargain I just got either at a thrift store, garage sale, Real Deals, or anywhere he just says “Oh great, more fried bat wings!”

I often get offended by that, but if I really think about it I have to admit it,  a bargain on anything totally makes me happy.

Even if the item on sale is something I will never use.

Then of course, there’s my tendency to buy more than one, just because it’s a bargain.

So anyway, I decided to share some of my “Fried Bat Wing” collection with you, my long suffering readers.

Who knows?

You may actually have a use for them.

I got out a box and started to fill it up with anything I could fit into it that I had too many of, or just no particular use for right now.

First item in the box will be this burlap coffee sack!

Next, a Pottery Barn clock bottle stopper.  (brand new, yours will be still in the box)

I liked these so much I bought 3 of them! Why?  They were on sale!

giveaway 019  giveaway 021

And since you might need a bottle to use for the new bottle stopper, I’ll throw in this cute little blue glass  bottle. (about 6 1/2 “ high)

 giveaway 023 giveaway 022

A cast iron fleur-de-lis double hook. (approx 6 “ high) with a rusty looking finish.

giveaway 017

8 vintage napkins or hankies (I’m thinking napkins as they are about 16” square)

giveaway 015

There’s some slight yellowing around the edges, and a few faint spots, but overall they are in excellent shape.

The design is perfect for spring!

giveaway 014

A vinyl saying purchased from “Say it on the Wall’s” website.

It’s approx 8x10. (I bought a few too many vinyl's too)

giveaway 012

A Pottery Barn Taj Mahal jewelry holder.

giveaway 011

3 bedsprings

giveaway 010

3 tin chippy tiles,  vintage daisy pattern. (approx 6” square)

giveaway 008

Here’s a close up, they don’t photograph well.

giveaway 009

A new “vintage” metal washroom sign.

giveaway 003

And a reproduction metal advertising sign.

giveaway 001

So now let’s get to the rules;

  1. To enter in this follower appreciation giveaway, you must first be a follower!  Leave a comment letting me know you are for one entry.
  2. For a second entry, leave a separate comment telling me about something you bought just because it was on sale even though you didn’t need it. (please tell me I’m not the only one that does this!)
  3. Since shipping will probably be rather expensive for this box, I must limit entries to continental US and Canadian addresses only. No overseas shipping.  I’m so sorry!
  4. Entries will close on Sunday, April 10 at 10pm EST. The announcement will be made on Monday.
  5. Make sure there is a way I can contact you if you win.  If your email is attached to your profile, no problem, if not please leave it in your comment.

Good Luck and thank you all once again for making blogging such a fun experience for me!

  2. I bought felt and more felt that I thought I needed, but really didn't just because it was on sale. I do this all the time when it comes to fabric. So now I am trying to find lots of felt projects to use it all up on. So no you are not alone.

  7. I'm terrible when it comes to sales - the 'buy more save more' pitch always works on me! Thankfully my husband can reign me in a bit, but I once bought a stained glass candleholder on sale which went straight to the donate box as I realised as soon as I got home that I didn't actually like it...

  8. I'm always buying stuff cause it's a bargain too~who doesn't love a bargain! Yesterday I bought a little ceramic pedestal stand bowl from hobby lobby because it was only $1.50!! Sooo didn't need it! lol You're not alone in your bargain hunting ~ I tell the hubby I don't have any other vices so at least mine is cheap! lol

  9. I'm a follower of your blog and was hooked the first time I saw the name of it. I'm a confirmed "curb shopper".

  10. oh my goodness for REALS? That is the best collection ever! I buy things on sale all the time and usually use them, but once in awhile I've purchased something that I have NO use for :)

  11. Yip I'm a follower and I love all your quirky items you find and then what you turn them into. Wish I had your gift of being able to use power tools and make things.

  12. My best friend and I make gift baskets which we donate to local non-profits so we love to bargain shop! We have a huge stash of "bargains" that we know we will use someday! Bins of closeout placemats and napkins, tubs of one of a kind dishes, shelves of journals, books and DVD's. They were all too good to pass up...

  14. Let's see something I bought just because it was on sale...thinking, thinking..Oh yes I bought 2 metal and glass finial things from HObby Lobby because they were like 90% off. I still have them in my "decorating closet" and haven't used them yet!

  15. Bahahaha! I STINKIN' love it!! I've been following you for awhile, and you make me laugh!

  16. I think that the one thing that I'm constantly buying is fabric remnants. I have no idea why, and I've ended up with some strange colors because it was only $0.50 for a yard!

    Go figure!

  17. Well you already know that I'm a follower.....I love to see what you have created from your "finds".

  19. OH yea-- to buy something because it was on sale...could it be just because it was FOR SALE?
    I don't shop too many dept. or discount stores... but I do shop at Bargainland!!!! Like a huge Garage Sale opened twice a month for 3-5 days depending;

So yeah, I buy baskets-- because they're for sale.
I buy cast iron skillets-- because they're for sale.
I buy shoes that are men's size 14--SKETCHERS, because they are for sale, then I ship them to my nephew (who is 6 ft tall and still growing) --- BECAUSE THEY'RE FOR SALE!!!
I buy a parts washer and give it away to my brother for his shop-- because it's for sale
I buy old curtains for the yardage, old lace, old table cloths and old flannel--- because it's for sale!

    Rose- YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

  23. fried bat wings, eh? My family is pa dutch! My dad's side.
Yeah, I guess I've been known to buy things that are a good deal. It happens less lately though. There was something recently that I had to really talk myself out of buying multiples because it was a GREAT deal, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was. I had a whole conversation with myself, convincing myself why I should get said "stuff". It's going to drive me crazy trying to remember it.
So, long story short, NO you are not alone. We're all right there with ya!

  27. Yes, I'm guilty of buying things I don't need because they're on sale and then buyers remorse quickly follows (or dieters remorse if its a food item, such as little debbie easter cakes, 2 for $3!). I once bought about 10 pairs of "1928" earrings because of a sale at Macy's and I never have worn them all!

    ReplyDelete
  28. For some reason, I love old bar ware! I'll buy martini & margarita glasses, wine goblets, rum tumblers and old cocktail shakers-if I find them on sale- even when I have no room for them!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have bought many things because they are on sale. Recent purchase was the bunnies that are on my easter display. They were too cute to pass and I even looked through the store for more!

  35. And now, since the give-away is such a generous one with really cool items, I've got to get this second entry in. But, I'm not too bad to buy things just because they're on sale. Or maybe I just don't realize it. Since 95% of everything I buy comes from an estate sale or yard sale. Now, I buy a lot from those places just because it's cheap and perhaps it was the most interesting thing there, but I didn't particularly like or need it. Other than that, I've bought clothes I couldn't wear at 75-90% off because, well because they were 75-90% off and hey. Just 10 pounds less and I should be able to fit in it. Yeah. Got a closet full of things I've never worn.

Drop by my blog and enter my April give-away, too!

  39. I don't usually buy retail as I am a thriftstore, flea market, yardsale, shopper as well as a dumpser diving, curb shopping grandma. LOL When I do shop it has to be on sale. I needed a little wooden birdhouse for a project I was working on and found that where they were usually a dollar each they were now 2 for a dollar. Even though I only needed one I bought 6. Guess that would be my fried bats wings. LOL

  45. What have I brought home that I didn't really need? How about what have I brought home that I did need...not much, maybe nothing. I just bought 44 vintage milk bottles. How many does one person need? Not 44; but they were such a good deal.

  47. Buy things because they're on sale? Ah, yeah. My favorite is the 75% off area in the back of Joann's. I cannot leave that space UNTIL I have something in my hands! I've gotten so many really awesome things. I'm just waiting for the day when I can figure out what to do with and where to put them! Hee!

  50. I bought a silver serving dish at a thrift store this week. Already have one almost identical to it except the one I already had is better because it has a glass inserts. So no idea why I bought it other than it was $2.00 and who can pass by a $2.00 piece of silver!

  51. I have been a lurker on your blog for a while now. You had me on pins and needles over Katy's escape. I felt awful about the wicker table that got run over. I am in awe over your ingenuity! 53. Oops forgot to add what I have bought on sale that I don't need ... hmmmmm ... well there was that old wooden Nehi soda crate I got on sale last weekend at a surplus store. Or it could be the pretty carved wooden salad bowl I found at a thrift store for 1/2 off. Or a large hand saw that's all rusty that was on sale at the Restore. I guess I'll have to keep an eye on your blog for inspiration! Fantastic giveaway by the way!

  55. Dear, sweet Rose,

I get you. Reading your blog makes me feel understood too. I appreciate that on so many levels.

I found a little ceramic bird figurine last night that I shouldn't have. He was so teeny tiny and $7.99 in a junk store display case. I laughed out loud when I saw the price, but I was envisioning him spray painted in glossy white so I had to try.

I asked the lady if that was really his price (with that tone like, "Really?? REALLY??") she said she'd give him to me half off. I smiled at him and brought him home. I couldn't leave him there alone, especially when he had no idea how beautiful he could be. He inspired me to find some friends, so I ended up buying several more birds & owls from 3 different junk stores...

I'm blogging them tomorrow. I hope you'll come check them out. They're drying from their first coat of spray paint in my garage.

I'm drooling over those tiles. Yup, I drool over fabulous junk too.

Can't wait to see more fried bat wings, my friend. :)

    Amber

  57. And OF COURSE, I bought fried bat wings before. The most recent FBW for me is a chicken feeder. I went to a barn sale and they had a whole field of cylindrical, chicken feeders. I didn't even know what they were but, alas, one was painted purple and just CALLING my name. I had it on the front porch for a while as a plant stand, but it started rusting and leaving a stain on my deck. So...I brought it inside and put sticks in it for decoration. I'm still not 100% happy with it...but now it's mine AND it was already painted purple, so I'm happy with my FBW.

Your giveaway is SO cool.....I would be happy with just ONE of the wonderful items! Have a great weekend!

  58. The last think I bought that I didn't really need, but it was on sale? The list is long, Rose. A little oil and vinegar set. It was on sale, and it had an S on it. SOLD! Three hobnail milk glass wall sconces. On sale. Hobnail. Milk glass. SOLD! I have no where to put them. That didn't stop me! Shoes at TJMAXX. Neutral. Cute. On the clearance rack. SOLD! I have nothing to wear them with, but they're cute!

I hide it all, too. It really is a sickness.

  59. I'm an idiot for embroidered handkerchiefs not because I need them, use them, or even display them. I just want them to horde but they do have to be cheap.
Love the name of you blog!

  60. Howdy Rose, YEAH on your 1 year Blogaversary. Ya know I've been a devoted reader for awhile. You're SUCH an inspiration : ) Thank you !!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. What have I regretted buying that was on sale? Welp, for me it's usually makeup. I think I have like 18 foundations and I have used only 2 really, lol. I buy them usually because I think I NEED them and they're on sale AND I usually have a coupon. Don't get me started on glosses, lol. I never regret anything for my house because that stuff is usually picked up @Goodwill, a garage sale or even the side of the road. Not a waste of money : )

    ReplyDelete
  62. Love your blog. I made the mistake of buying a coffee table thinking I would turn it into a bench at the end of a bed. It was at an excellent price at the garage sale and very heavy, but alas it's too wide to place at the end of my bed. I've bought many things on sale just because "it's on sale". *le sigh* not a good thing sometimes for me to do.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Congrats on your blogaversary! I have about 12 headboards sitting in a grain bin waiting to be made into a bench. One of these days I'll get to them.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I once bought about 10 yards of bright summery Lilly Pulitzer-style fabric. At the time I didn't even know how to sew, but it was on sale for $1.99/yard & I took the bolt home!
I still have about 7 yards of it in my sewing room!

  69. Now, for an incredibly worthless "had to have" I purchased a mangle. It's an old fashioned contraption for pressing linens and such. It looked cool, but was totally worthless. It didn't work, so no original purpose there - and I couldn't even make a display out of it as nothing would sit or stand or even hang on it because of it's strange shape. It stood in a corner for years looking cool, but totally stupid in the grand scheme of things! I loved your fried bat wings story - pretty much fits me and mine to a tee... except they refer to my treasures as "crap"! Oh Thank You Lord for Bloggy Friends!

  71. My fried bat wings are end tables at Garage sales. I literally have rows of them stacked on top of each other, floor to ceiling. Trying to talk Jayson into the fact that it is shelving... he isnt going for it. But you just canNOT pass a good deal on a good solid wood end table with great legs!!! (or maybe thats just me, lol) ;)

  72. I am entering but only if promise not to send me any of those fried bat wings... hahaha. Just looking at picture of those little creatures give the willies.

That is so generous of you Rose... a whole year, where did the time go? I am loving that little PB stopper and bottle... adorable. I recognize a couple of things there...lol.

Hope you are having a glorious weekend.

  73. Oh yes, I am happy to report I am a sucker for a bargain. I usually buy mutiple jeans... one problem with that though when you gain 5 pounds you now have 5 pairs of pants that don't fit.

It is hard to buy multiples in the thrift stores so I am safe there. I knew there was a reason I shop in them all the time. LOL

    Good luck everyone.

    Hugs, Deb
